Facebook's new reactions also speak Pirate

Facebook's new reactions also speak Pirate

Since the majority of the world doesn't speak English (gasp!), Facebook translated its new reactions into a number of languages... including pirate.

Anyone who sets their language preference to 'Pirate' (go to Settings, then Language to do that), will be entertained by 'Yo ho ho!', 'Shiver me timbers!', 'Feelin' like takin' a walk on the plank with a bottle o' rum' reactions.

Fun, fun, fun...

Snapchat brings Live Stories to the web for the first time

Snapchat brings Live Stories to the web for the first time

This year you didn't have to be inside Snapchat's app to see Oscar Live Stories: you could watch it all on the web.

Snapchat quietly updated its website last night with a way to view the Oscars' Live Story online (http://ift.tt/24wnn5n).

This is the first time you've been able to see snaps outside of the app, and it's a big step toward making Snapchat more accessible (and potentially more viral).

Will this get people to get hooked on Snapchat? Not me. You?

Google+ Web Preview updates

Google+ Web Preview updates

Google has rolled out a few updates and lots of bug fixes for the G+ preview on the Web including:

♨ Easier access to profile information

Prior to this update, if you wanted to see more information on a G+ profile, you had to click a small “i” icon in the bottom-right of the header.

Needless to say, it wasn't very intuitive or user-friendly.

Now you'll see a prominent ABOUT icon to guide you to one's profile.

In addition to that, your profile name and tagline are clickable and will lead you to your About page as well.

♨ About information always visible on Communities

Community About information also used to be hidden behind that same “i” icon as on the profiles.

Now, you’ll with two drop-downs: “About Community,” which contains the description of the Community, and “Filter,” containing the various categories.

Another Communities update: Public Community Member Lists

According to a post by Google's +Luke Wroblewski (http://tgcafe.it/2169Tci) "Starting today, public Community member lists will no longer display suspended users. We've also adjusted the ordering of these member lists to make them less of a target for spammers (whom we'll continue to aggressively suspend when we identify them). Going forward, we'll make improvements to Community member list ordering to make it work better for both members and moderators."

♨ Shortcut to create a Collection when making a post

You can now create a new Collection while creating a post - something that wasn't available before.

Clicking on 'Create a Collection' will allow you to add the new Collection name. Don't forget to go back to that Collection after you publish the post and personalize it with the tagline and the cover photo.

Plus ♨ 206 bug fixes

All welcomed changes, wouldn't you say?

Which photo filter is the most popular on Instagram?

Clarendon is, by far, the most-used Instagram photo filter, both in the U.S. and worldwide, according to a new study by graphic-design program Canva http://tgcafe.it/1KQBxbi.

The second-favorite filter in 16 states – including the Pacific Northwest, much of the Midwest, and a few states on the East Coast – is Gingham.

When it comes to third-favorite filters in the U.S., Juno and Lark both lead the pack in 12 states respectively, including the West Coast (plus Alaska), Texas, and much of the Midwest.

Unsurprisingly, Instagram users in 119 countries (the vast majority of the world) filter most of their photos with Clarendon.

SumAll, the social media analytics dashboard, is ditching free accounts

If you have been enjoying using SumAll for free, bad news: SumAll will be discontinuing their free service and will only be offering premium accounts.

Reason: "handling that amount of data costs a fortune, over $4 million last year." http://tgcafe.it/20ZRbTz

So in a week or so, all free accounts will be archived. What this means for current free users is they will no longer get daily emails, tweets, and have access to data online.

Free to $99/month might be quite a bullet to bite for many....

Meet Air on iOS, the ‘world’s first’ social media keyboard

Meet Air on iOS, the ‘world’s first’ social media keyboard

The new keyboard, mady by Vancouver-based company Bubbl, makes it simple to hashtag, “at-mention” friends on Instagram and Twitter, and even customize and annotate images for posting to social networks, all from right inside Air keyboard.

“Every social platform is different... Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and let’s not forget about LinkedIn. All these great spaces have incredibly different user experiences. We had to find a better way to create content, we needed a faster way to tag and mention across all social platforms. The funny thing was, the keyboard was right there in front of us the whole time.” said creators Nathan Oshidari & Troy Spracklin about Air.

Air has quite a few cool features to make your social media life easier:

♨ If you connect Air to your social networks, it will recognize your contacts and friends and allow you to tag them or mention them.

♨ Hashtagging is made easy with Air - the keyboard surfaces common tags automatically for easy one-tap insertion.

♨ Expand tweets and break “140” with an AIR Memo. With a single tap, AIR converts any tweet or message into a beautifully formatted image, ready for sharing.

♨ Review, edit and reuse previously posted content from any connected social network within any application.

♨ You can also create and share optimized images with AIR's Image Editor.

If I had an iPhone, I'd be all over this one. What about you?

Facebook live video-streaming comes to Android in the U.S., opens on iOS to more than 30 countries

Facebook live video-streaming comes to Android in the U.S., opens on iOS to more than 30 countries

Facebook has announced that it is finally expanding its live video-streaming tool to Android devices, but only in the U.S. for now.

An interesting fact from FB blog post http://tgcafe.it/1LiiHK3:

"We’ve seen that on average people watch a live video more than three times longer when it is live compared to when it is not live."

To share live video, simply tap “What’s on your mind?” at the top of News Feed and select the Live Video icon.

You can write a quick description and select the audience before going live.

During your broadcast, you’ll see the number of live viewers, the names of friends who are tuning in, and respond to a real-time stream of comments.

When you end your broadcast, it will be saved on your Timeline like any other video, which you can then delete or keep for your friends to watch later.

I am yet to try it myself. You?

YouTube now lets you blur out anything in a video

YouTube now lets you blur out anything in a video

The new Custom Blurring feature is definitely a great (and much needed!) addition to the suite of YouTube editing tools.

Once your video is uploaded to YouTube, you can now draw a box around the thing you want to blur in a video, and YouTube will automatically keep that thing from being seen clearly, even as it moves in the frame.

“While the use cases for this tool are vast, we built this feature with visual anonymity in mind. We wanted to give you a simple way to blur things like people, contact information or financial data without having to remove and re-upload your content.” YouTube privacy lead Amanda Conway wrote in a blog post. http://tgcafe.it/1mZPb07

Here's the Skinny on the new feature:

♨ You can find Custom Blurring in the Blurring Effects tab of the Enhancements tool in YouTube.

♨ You can adjust the size of the box, move it, and adjust the start and stop time.

♨ A Lock button keeps the blurred box in the same place on the screen.

♨ You can save the changes to your video or create a separate one that reflects your changes.

Facebook added a Birthday Video Cam for iOS

Facebook added a Birthday Video Cam for iOS

Facebook launched a birthday video cam feature, allowing users to record 15-second birthday videos for their friends.

Here's how it works, according to AdWeek's Social Times http://tgcafe.it/1p1mwcL:

On iOS devices, you’ll be able to go to your birthday friend’s profile, tap the banner video prompt where you would usually write happy birthday, and record! Once you’ve got a heartfelt or funny birthday message, you can swipe through an assortment of birthday-themed frames to add to your video before posting it on your friend’s Timeline. Get together with your friends or family to make an extra-special birthday group video message.

Looks like a nice way to stand out and personalize, don't you think?

New Blab feature alert: this yellow button lets you share last 30s of a blab

"Share Last 30s" Blab button lets you share awesome moments from Blab to your friends on Facebook & Twitter.

Here's why the Blab team has built it (according to Blab blog post http://tgcafe.it/1oFlIue):

1. There are amazing moments in live video. You don’t plan for them, they just happen.

2. Your FB friends & Twitter followers will watch a 30s highlight in their feed, instead of clicking a link to a long replay.

Soooo.... when cool things happen during a blab, you hit the yellow button.

It lets you share out the last 30 seconds of video you just saw.

This feature is in beta, and may not be available in all streams. Feel free to let the Blab team know how you like it in comments: http://tgcafe.it/1oFlIue

Google desktop search results change: no sidebar ads, 4 ads at the top. So what?

Google desktop search results change: no sidebar ads, 4 ads at the top. So what?

Last Friday (February 19), Google confirmed that search results pages on desktop will no longer show text ads in the right sidebar.*

Instead, as many as four text ads will display above the organic listings, and three text ads will show at the bottom of the page.

The total number of text ads that can appear on a SERP will shrink from as many as 11 to a maximum of 7.

***the elimination of right-side ads impacts all desktop searches worldwide; the addition of the fourth ad above search results will happen for “highly commercial queries” - queries with the intent to buy. (as per Search Engine Land http://tgcafe.it/1OsKWQX)

What this change to Google SERPs might mean:

1. fewer ads might lead to higher prices due to supply and demand.

2. SEOs might start seeing their sites being pushed further down the page and/or fewer organic listings might be shown per page.

Notice the word 'might'.

As of right now, there's no evidence that organic listings are affected much by this change.

There are still 10 organic listings per page.

Sure they might be pushed down a bit on a small percentage of queries (after all, how many queries really fit to be deemed at “highly commercial queries”?), but for the most part, little should change for organic listings. At least, at the moment...

Learn more about the change in this post by +Jennifer Slegg http://tgcafe.it/1ozuvNu, as well as this one by +Ginny Marvin http://tgcafe.it/1Q9pXEY and +Pete Meyers at Moz http://tgcafe.it/1KHy9iV.

AMP results appear to be live in Google search results

AMP results appear to be live in Google search results

This is pretty big.

+Jennifer Slegg is reporting that Google has indeed begun pushing out AMP results late on February 22, 2016, rolling out across mobile devices in their news carousels. (http://tgcafe.it/1TDihR8)

AMP results are listed with both a lightning bolt and the word AMP next to the time of the article in the search results.

In case you are not familiar with AMP and why it matters to your site, here's a quick Skinny.

AMP (Accelerated Mobile Pages) is a way to build web pages to render fast on mobile - Google's version of Facebook’s Instant Articles and Apple News, in other words.

How does AMP speed up your pages? Basically, by stripping all of the whistles and bells and delivering a static version of your content.

If your website has AMP implemented (see below), then Google will deliver the AMP version of the page instead of your responsive website page.

How do you implement AMP?

If you are on Wordpress, then it's easy - there are 2 plugins to help you.

♨ AMP-WP – Developed by Automattic, the same folks that own WordPress.com and are partners in the open source AMP project.

♨ Accelerated Mobile Pages – Developed by Mohammed Kaludi and Ahmed Kaludi.

To learn more about the plugins, read +MaAnna Stephenson's post http://tgcafe.it/1ozqTLA.

Whether you are thinking of implementing AMP or not, one thing is for sure - you might be missing out on a big chunk of traffic if you don't. Just sayin'.

Facebook launched redesigned video metrics interface in Page Insights

Facebook launched redesigned video metrics interface in Page Insights

Here are the metrics that will be available in the updated interface:

Minutes Viewed [NEW]: The total minutes of watch time spent on the video. This is one of the most requested video metrics from publishers, and we’re excited to make it available today.

Unique Viewers: The number of individual people who saw the video.

Views: The number of times your video was viewed.

10-Second Views [NEW]: The number of times the video was viewed to 10 seconds. If the video is shorter than 10 seconds, this metric refers to the number of times people viewed at least 97 percent of the video.

Average % Completion: The portion of the video (on a percentage basis) that is viewed in an average watch session.

Clicking through Average % Completion reveals:

Audience Retention: A visual representation of views of the video at each moment as a percentage of all views.

Average View Duration: The average length of time the video was watched in seconds.

You can also get more granular video performance data by clicking through individual metrics on the updated Insights view.

These breakdowns include:

Sound-on vs. Sound-off [NEW]: A breakdown between views with sound and views without sound is available for both Views and 10-Second Views.

Organic vs. Paid: A breakdown between organic metrics and paid metrics is available for Minutes Viewed, Views, 10-Second Views, and Unique Viewers.

The abundance of metrics will certainly keep any data-eager page owner very busy and very happy.

Skype starts to roll out free group video calling on iOS and Android

The feature, which supports as many as 25 participants at once, should be working on iOS and Android devices in North America and Western Europe in the next few days, fully available worldwide in March.

The best part about it? You can invite absolutely anyone.

They don’t need to be in your Skype contact list — or even have a Skype account.

All you need to do is start a chat on your iPhone, iPad or Android and share the unique conversation link however you want — via email, WhatsApp, Messenger, Twitter or Facebook.

If they have Skype, they’ll join your conversation by clicking on the link and if they don’t, they can join the group video call on a computer using Skype for Web.

Gmailify from Google connects Yahoo! Mail or Hotmail/Outlook email accounts to the Gmail interface

Gmailify from Google connects Yahoo! Mail or Hotmail/Outlook email accounts to the Gmail interface

Do you have Yahoo! Mail or Hotmail/Outlook email accounts, but want more of Gmail features, like spam protection and inbox organization, on these accounts, without changing your email address?

Now you can have the best of both worlds.

Google has launched a product called Gmailify, giving Android Gmail app users an opportunity to 'Gmailify' your other email accounts.

All you need to do is open the Gmail app, sign in to your email account(s), and enable Gmailify.

If you ever change your mind, you can unlink your account(s) at any time, and continue to access them through the Gmail app without using Gmailify.

See the video below for a demo on how it works.

Facebook's Instant Articles will be rolled out to all publishers starting April 12

Facebook's Instant Articles will be rolled out to all publishers starting April 12

In just a couple of months, any publisher of any size, anywhere in the world can become a Facebook publisher.

That means that you, should you choose to, can host content directly on the social network.

Facebook's Instant Articles allow you to create interactive articles directly on Facebook, offering a rich media experience with fast load times.

On the plus side:

♨ your readers will have a (potentially) better experience interacting with your content since they won't have to leave FB;
♨ you'll be able to monetize your content via direct-sold ads (you'll keep 100 percent of that revenue); plus, Facebook enables publishers to further monetize their content using the Facebook Audience Network.

On the minus side:

♨ if people read your content on FB, then... why do they need to go to your website?...
♨ never a good idea to put all your content into one platform's basket.

Curious - is this something you think you might try out?

Personally, I don't see the feature yet. Do you?

[Influencer Marketing] When standing out is as simple as giving a gift @SEMRush

[Influencer Marketing] When standing out is as simple as giving a gift @SEMRush

I absolutely love competitive research software company +SEMrush (use it almost daily!), but now I have an even more personal reason to love the thoughtful team behind the tool.

They surprised me and my family with a delicious Christmas gift this year – a custom 4-box chocolate set from John&Kira’s.

I get bombarded with free offers to switch to SEMrush' competitors. Sure I might take them for a spin, BUT none ever live up to the great tool suite SEMrush has built, and even more so - to the great team that's behind the product.

Google+ Android Update 7.2.0

Google+ Android Update 7.2.0

This release has several bug fixes and three new features.

Specifically:

♨ 29 bugs fixed
♨ 10 accessibility issues addressed
♨ Faster and safer browsing of Web sites (info below)
♨ Search history and autocomplete
♨ Tap on the bottom bar to scroll to the top of Collections, Communities, and Notifications

A word on Chrome Custom Tabs

Now when you tap on a Web link on Google+, instead of firing up the full-blown version of Chrome, the app will use Chrome custom tabs to pre-load Web sites, which makes viewing content much quicker.

Other features like saved passwords, autofill, and Tap to Search are also available in custom tabs (http://tgcafe.it/1oh2ABZ).

Don't like Custom Tabs? Just un-check "Enable Custom Tabs” in the Google+ Settings menu.

My Little Sister Taught Me How To “Snapchat Like The Teens”

My Little Sister Taught Me How To “Snapchat Like The Teens”

I am getting VERY old for this... just don't get Snapchat.

And neither did Ben Rosen from Buzzfeed - until he asked his 13 year-old sister to show him how it's done.

Here's an excerpt.

ME: Tell me what your day is like on Snapchat.
BROOKE: When I wake up, I have about 40 snaps from friends. I just roll through and respond to them.
ME: How do you respond? Like, “haha good one, Elsbitch”?
BROOKE: No conversations…it’s mostly selfies. Depending on the person, the selfie changes. Like, if it’s your best friend, you make a gross face, but if it’s someone you like or don’t know very well, it’s more regular.
ME: I’ve seen how fast you do these responses… How are you able to take in all that information so quickly?
BROOKE: I don’t really see what they send. I tap through so fast. It’s rapid fire.

Apparently, the teenagers 'don’t really see what they send'...

Maybe that's one of the reasons I don't get it.

You?

Google is shutting down Picasa on May 1, 2016

Google is shutting down Picasa on May 1, 2016

"We believe we can create a much better experience by focusing on one service that provides more functionality and works across mobile and desktop, rather than divide our efforts across two different products." Google said in a blog post http://tgcafe.it/1o7AcCg.

The company is asking Picasa users to try Google Photos for all their picture needs.

However, for those of you who don’t want to use Google Photos or who still want to be able to view specific content, such as tags, captions or comments, Google will be creating a new place for you to access your Picasa Web Albums data.

That way, you will still be able to view, download, or delete your Picasa Web Albums, you just won’t be able to create, organize or edit albums (you would now do this in Google Photos).

Picasa Web Albums and the Picasa Web Albums Data API will continue working as normal until May 1, 2016. After that, users will only be able to view their photos, while developers will lose some API functions.

Google will stop supporting the Picasa desktop application sooner: on March 15, 2016. But if you have already have the software, it should continue to function — there just won’t be new updates anymore.

Instagram is launching video view counts

Instagram is launching video view counts

What took them so long?...

Interesting stats: based on its internal data, Instagram said that in the past six months, the amount of time people spent watching videos on the service has increased by more than 40 percent. (http://tgcafe.it/1O6W2Lg)

As views roll out in “the coming weeks”, you’ll find them underneath each video post. You can still see likes on videos by tapping views.

Twitter's new algorithmic timeline is here

Twitter's new algorithmic timeline is here

As of today, Twitter became quite a bit more like Facebook - to make the service more appealing for new or casual users.

It will now display a selection of what Twitter thinks might be the most interesting or popular tweets at the top of your timeline, rather than showing you the most recent ones, as it has done traditionally.

Here's how the new timeline works (according to Twitter's post: http://tgcafe.it/20VT05V).

You flip on the feature in your settings (more on that below); then when you open Twitter after being away for a while, the Tweets you're most likely to care about will appear at the top of your timeline – still recent and in reverse chronological order.

The rest of the Tweets will be displayed right underneath, also in reverse chronological order, as always.

At any point, just pull-to-refresh to see all new Tweets at the top in the live, up-to-the-second experience you already know and love.

(NOTE: I don't have the option to turn on/off the new timeline in my Twitter on the web settings yet. Do you?)

You can adjust your setting for Show me the best Tweets first by doing the following:

On twitter.com:

1. Log in to your account on twitter.com and go to your Account settings page.
2. Under Content, look for Timeline and toggle the box next to Show me the best Tweets first to change the setting.

Twitter for iOS:

1. On your profile, tap the gear icon and select Settings.
2. Tap the account whose settings you’d like to adjust.
3. Under Timeline, tap Timeline personalization.
4. Next to Show me the best Tweets first, tap to turn it off.

Twitter for Android:

1. Tap the overflow icon
2. Tap Settings.
3. Tap Timeline.
4. Next to Show me the best Tweets first, uncheck the box to turn it off.

This update is available on Twitter’s iOS and Android apps, as well as the Web.

Last Friday, BuzzFeed reported http://tgcafe.it/1Q9cwKv that an algorithmic timeline was coming.

This certainly got the Twitter community worked up and led to the massively trending hashtag #RIPTwitter.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey responded http://tgcafe.it/1Kc6fLw saying: “Regarding #RIPTwitter: I want you all to know we're always listening. We never planned to reorder timelines next week.”

The new algorithmic timeline is certainly not a complete revamp of the Twitter timeline as rumored (not yet anyway), but it's certainly a decent compromise.

What think you? Thumbs up or down?

[Instagram update] Instagram now supports multiple accounts for some iOS and Android users

[Instagram update] Instagram now supports multiple accounts for some iOS and Android users

Some Instagram users are now lucky enough to be able to log on to multiple Instagram accounts simultaneously.

Previously, you either had to stick with one Instagram profile or log out between photo postings.

For marketers this was hardly ideal, making this a heavily requested feature for years.

As MarketingLand.com reports http://tgcafe.it/1PovN4M, the option is only available for some users across both Android and iOS devices at this time.

Android users must join the Instagram beta community (http://tgcafe.it/1QKQFGa) to gain access to the new feature.

Still, only a small number of users seem to be reporting multi-account support.

If you have the feature, the option to log on to another account can be found in the options menu (top right corner) and on the bottom of the settings page.

Once you’re logged in, you can easily switch between accounts.

Do you have it yet?

[Facebook update] All Facebook Pages can now reply to comments with private messages

[Facebook update] All Facebook Pages can now reply to comments with private messages

Until now, page admins could only respond to customers in the same way that the person reached out to the page, either through a comment or private message.

As of February 3, page admins are be able to reply to public comments with a private message, which will hopefully help them solve private customer requests more efficiently.

To reply privately to a customer comment, Page admins can click the new “Message” option, and a private message thread with the commenter will open.

The message from the page includes a link to the customer’s comment for reference.

When a page responds privately to a comment, the comment shows a note that the page responded privately, so other page visitors know that the page handled the request.

This feature only works page to fans, but not page to page.

How to get traffic and links from blog link roundups? Build relationships with the right people!

Yes, Problogger publishes link roundups. But does that mean you need to go suck up to Darren Rowse to have any hope of being included in their roundups?

Not at all.

As much as Darren, I am sure, would love to write every single post on his blog, he doesn't.

So build relationships with those people who do write those roundups.

Like Stacey Roberts of TheVeggieMama.com who writes the link roundups for Problogger.net.

After 15 years, Google's head of search, Amit Singhal, is leaving the company

After 15 years, Google's head of search, Amit Singhal, is leaving the company

Google Search as know it is losing its chief architect - Google’s Senior Vice President of Search, Amit Singhal.

He was the guy who rewrote the algorithm originally created by Google cofounders Larry Page and Sergey Brin that decided what Google would return in response to searches.

Singhal also oversaw Google’s second major rewrite of its search algorithm - Hummingbird, which happened just over two years ago.

And, according to SearchEngineLand's +Danny Sullivan (http://tgcafe.it/1nOdKhZ), Hummingbird is the bridge between the Google algo of the past and the next big chapter in Google search: machine learning.

This is a very important bit.

Who's stepping in to take Amit's place?

Machine learning head John Giannandrea.

And Danny Sullivan writes:

"With Giannandrea taking over, there are many who will take that as a sign that the machine learning revolution for search is now the future. It’s both a shift in leadership and a shift in where the leaders have come from, in terms of tackling the search challenge."

Amit Singhal's last day will be February 26, 2016, and his next venture will be philanthropy.

Here's what he said in his G+ (http://tgcafe.it/20HqHYA):

"As I entered the fifteenth year of working at Google, I've been asking myself the question, "what would you want to do for the next fifteen?" The answer has overwhelmingly been: give back to others. It has always been a priority for me to give back to people who are less fortunate, and make time for my family amidst competing work constraints--but on both fronts, I simply want to give and do more."

.....

"I love Google. It is a company that believes in doing the right thing, a company that believes in doing good in the world, a company… that cares. I look back at my time here with a profound sense of gratitude that I was a part of building this. Now, with pride, gratitude, and joy in my heart, I need to define my next fifteen years."

Before posting your next Facebook update, avoid the most annoying Facebook posts in your State

Are you in California? Avoid talking about your personal problems.

Are you in Florida? Floridians are tired at looking at pictures of your food.

And your selfies are not welcome in the Louisiana Bayou.

Social marketing and public-relations firm Rantic Marketing surveyed more than 10,000 Facebook users across the 50 states to learn which of five types of Facebook posts annoy them the most.

Here’s how many states chose each:

♨ Personal problems: 21
♨ Selfies: 9
♨ Political posts: 7
♨ Food pictures: 7
♨ Baby pictures: 6

Personally, I could live without all of the above in my News Feed. You?
