Twitter Moments are being democratized - any user will now be able to create and curate them

Twitter Moments, originally announced last October (http://tgcafe.it/1RsbF3W) are collections of tweets on certain subjects.

Until now Moments have been curated by Twitter staffers, but as of today, anyone will be able to curate Moments based on their own as well as on other people’s content.

Twitter Moments will first be open to the users on the web; it is coming soon to Twitter’s mobile apps as well.

Here's a link to Twitter's guide (a 'Moment' of its own - you get to see what it's about first hand) to 'Tips & tricks for making a great Moment' http://tgcafe.it/2dCcgH3 - not much there, but might be helpful nonetheless.

Below's a quick video on how Moments work.

Google introduced a new way to quickly find content from installed apps on your Android phone

Google introduced a new way to quickly find content from installed apps on your Android phone

To access this feature, go to the Google app on your Android phone and find the In Apps tab.

A few examples of what you can do with this new search mode:

☕ Find your contacts and messages.

Easily find the friend you want to catch up with, or the name of the new sushi place that your friend told you about last month — just search for [sushi] and find the message.

☕ Listen to your favorite running song or watch that sneezing panda video for the 15th time — all in one place.

☕ Stay organized with your tasks and notes.

Want to check off items on your grocery list? No problem, just search for [groceries].

Today this search works with apps like Gmail, Spotify and YouTube.

In the coming months, Google will also be adding more apps, including Facebook Messenger, LinkedIn, Evernote, Glide, Todoist and Google Keep.

Searching your personal results happens entirely on your phone, so you can search even when you're not connected to WiFi or cellular data.

Only you can see your personal results, and you can control what apps appear by going to Settings within the Google app.

Now you can see your Google Calendar and Gmail events, plus Google Contacts in Google Maps

Starting today, Android users worldwide will be able to quickly and easily access their events directly from the map - whether you're heading to a family dinner or getting subway directions to a birthday party.

THE SKINNY:

☕ Enter the address in the “Where” box when you create an event in Google Calendar.

☕ The next time you open Google Maps you’ll see your Google Calendar event right there on the map.

☕ To see a list of your upcoming events, simply open the sidebar menu, tap “Your Places” and then tap “Upcoming.”

☕ If you don’t want to see specific events on the map, you can hide them by tapping on the event from the map and then tapping “Dismiss.”

☕ You can label frequently visited places or upcoming destinations for quick access.

Just search for the address you want to label, press the label button, and enter a name.

The next time you type the name into the search box in Google Maps, your label will be a suggested result.

☕ Your Gmail events (confirmation emails for hotel, flight or restaurant reservations in Gmail) also appear in the new “Upcoming” tab in “Your Places.”

☕ Your Google contacts will appear on Google Maps as well.

☕ To manage all your personal content and how it appears on Google Maps, you can use the new personal content manager under the settings tab in the side menu. Simply toggle off what you don’t want to show and toggle on what’s most helpful to you.

All great changes, wouldn't you say?

😮 YouTube will shoot a FREE professional video for your business when you spend $150 to advertise on YouTube

You heard me right.

It's called YouTube Director Onsite https://director.youtube.com/

Let me say right off the bat that the service is only available in six major metropolitan areas: San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Atlanta, Chicago, and Boston.

To check if they're filming in your area, enter your zip code on the home page: https://director.youtube.com/

How does it work? THE SKINNY

☕ Choose a video template and they'll match you with a filmmaker to help you write a script.

☕ Your filmmaker will come to you to shoot, edit, and deliver your video—all in the same day.

☕ An ads specialist will get your video ad set up to help you reach the right audience for your business. You'll need to spend at least $150 on YouTube advertising.

☕ The entire process usually takes a few hours over 2-3 weeks.

If $150 still feels like a lot, The YouTube Director for Business app is a completely free way to start making video for your business. It is based on the same templates YouTube uses for Director onsite and it includes a ton of help content to help you make great videos using just your smartphone.

You can learn more about Director for Business here https://www.youtube.com/yt/advertise/make-video-ads.html

The video below is an example of the finished product.

Twitter has introduced an “I don’t like this tweet option” for iOS users

Twitter has introduced an “I don’t like this tweet option” for iOS users

Twitter has enabled a feature that lets you mark tweets that you don’t like - for iOS users for now.

This seems to be helpful if you elected to view Twitter's (new) algorithmic timeline instead of its traditional chronologically-ordered one.

(If you are not sure what I am talking about, learn about it here http://tgcafe.it/1osoHWy or see how to turn it off here http://tgcafe.it/22prZID.)

Presumably the more tweets you mark, the better the algorithm gets at determining what you like and don’t like.

You can learn more about controling your Twitter experience here: https://support.twitter.com/articles/20170134#controls

Facebook overestimated average viewing time for its video ads by 60-80% for two years

Facebook overestimated average viewing time for its video ads by 60-80% for two years

Apparently, for the past two years Facebook only counted video views of more than 3 seconds when calculating its “Average Duration of Video Viewed” metric.

Video views of under three seconds were not factored in, thereby inflating the average.

The Skinny:

☕ The error was discovered about a month ago by Facebook engineers.

☕ The 'average duration of video viewed' metric should have been calculated as the total time spent watching a video divided by the total number of people who played the video.

☕ Instead, it reflected the total time spent watching a video divided by only the number of “views” of a video (that is, when the video was watched for three or more seconds).

☕ As a result, the earlier counting method likely overestimated average time spent watching videos by between 60% and 80%, according to what the ad buying agency Publicis Media was told by Facebook. http://tgcafe.it/2dwe0kr

☕ To Facebook's credit, as soon as the discrepancy was discovered, it was fixed.

☕ Facebook also informed their partners and made sure to put a notice in the product itself so that anyone who went into their dashboard could understand the error.

☕ According to David Fischer, vice president of business and marketing partnership at Facebook, "We have also reviewed our other video metrics on the dashboard and have found that this has no impact on video numbers we have shared in the past, such as time spent watching video or the number of video views." http://tgcafe.it/2cWVDmB

☕ In the same post, David Fischer has also "sincerely apologized for the issues this has created for our clients."

Of course, due to the miscalculated data...

☕ marketers may have misjudged the performance of video advertising they have purchased from Facebook over the past two years.

☕ it also may have impacted their decisions about how much to spend on Facebook video versus other video ad sellers such as Google’s YouTube, Twitter, and even TV networks.

Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) begin global rollout in Google mobile search results

Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) begin global rollout in Google mobile search results

AMP are officially moving beyond the “Top Stories” section of Google mobile search. http://tgcafe.it/2d3ybSy

The Skinny:

☕ You’ll now see a gray 'AMP' label that indicates a page is AMP’d in Google's organic mobile search results.

☕ AMP pages won’t get a special boost in mobile results - this is NOT a rankings change.

☕ When there are two versions of a page, Google will prefer and link to the AMP version.

☕ There are now more than 600 million AMP-enabled documents, up from 150 million this summer.

☕ AMP categories now go well beyond news content - shopping, cooking, travel, e-commerce and entertainment, among others.

To find out more about AMP, check out ampproject.org.

Say Hello to Google Allo, Google's new messaging app. Core difference? Google's new Google Assistant

The brand-new Allo, available today for both for Android and iOS, has a number of interesting chat-related features, but what really makes it stand out is its capabilities involving search.

Meet your personal Google Assistant

In Google Allo, you’ll be introduced to a preview edition of the Google Assistant.

With your Assistant in Allo, you can have a conversation with Google — ask it questions and let it help you get things done directly in your chats.

Just type @google to bring your Assistant into any group chat. And of course, you can also chat one-one-one with your Assistant in Allo.

This is just the beginning of Google Assistant, by the way.

As Google writes http://tgcafe.it/2d33yfV:

"The Google Assistant is the next chapter in a journey Google has been on for many years to assist people in their everyday lives. We’re starting with a preview edition to show you just one way that your Assistant will work for you in chat. Over the coming months, your Assistant will be available in more Google products, working seamlessly throughout your day at home or on the go. The Assistant will initially be available in English, with more languages coming soon."

Gird your loins! Google Penguin update: Penguin is now real-time

Gird your loins! Google Penguin update: Penguin is now real-time

Google has officially confirmed they've began rolling out the Penguin real-time algorithm. http://tgcafe.it/2csRJDV

The Skinny:

☕ Penguin was first launched in 2012 and today has an update.

☕ Penguin is now real-time, so changes will be visible much faster, typically taking effect shortly after Google recrawls and reindexes a page.

☕ Penguin is now more granular. It devalues spam by adjusting ranking based on spam signals, rather than affecting ranking of the whole site.

"...webmasters should be free to focus on creating amazing, compelling websites. It's also important to remember that updates like Penguin are just one of more than 200 signals we use to determine rank."

Good idea...

Outlook.com gets support for Google Drive files, sharing Facebook photos, and finding attachments in past emails

Adding your Google Drive:

☕ begin a new message
☕ click or tap the attachment icon
☕ select Google Drive
☕ enter your account credentials.

Once added, your Google Drive appears as a source when attaching files. You can browse and select your files from either a list view or as thumbnails.

Facebook Photos:

Follow the same steps above to connect your Facebook account.

Once connected, you’ll be able to browse and attach your photos right from Facebook.

Your photos will be organized just like they are in Facebook: “Photos of me” are the ones that you’ve been tagged in and “My photos” are the ones you’ve uploaded.

Finding attachments in long conversations:

At the top of every thread, you’ll now find an attachment icon.

Click it to open a drop-down list of all the attachments in the conversation.

Simply select the file you are looking for and open it—you don’t have to click through each reply or expand the thread.

Microsoft will be rolling out these features "over the next few weeks."

The new social media network, Gab, promises its users almost total freedom of speech

The new social media network, Gab, promises its users almost total freedom of speech

Gab.ai is just over three weeks old with:

☕ 12,000 users,
☕ another 42,000 on its waitlist,
☕ 2.7 million pageviews on 240,000 posts,
☕ people spending an average of 12 minutes on the site each time they log in.

https://gab.ai/

It's built on an asymmetric follow model (I follow you, you don't have to follow me), and people can upvote or downvote the posts they see from people they follow in a central feed. Posts with the most upvotes are collected in a popular tab within Gab.

The premise of Gab? Strict freedom of speech policies.

Is it the next Ello or Peach, networks that have created a lot of initial buzz, but never really lived up to becoming alternatives to the big, established platforms? Give it a month, then we'll see. ;)

Why You Don’t Need that Link to Get the SEO Benefit from an Online Name Drop: The Power of Linkless Mentions

Always good to remember: people talking about you and your brand (in a positive way, of course) can ONLY be a good thing - with or without a link.

Here's what +Bruce Clay, Inc.'s +Duane Forrester writes in his recent blog post:

"Linkless mentions are a long-term investment that spreads your name far and wide. The engines can see this happening, and they’ll wonder why your brand or product is becoming more important. Then they start testing you in results to see if you please searchers.

That’s the ultimate goal. Pleasing the consumer. The engine wins and so does the business."

Google+ updates: better community moderation, improved notifications, photo comments, more

Google+ updates: better community moderation, improved notifications, photo comments, more

Starting “over the next few weeks”...

1. Users will be able to embed both still images and animated GIFs into comments on posts.

💃 💃 💃

2. New notifications center will roll out on the web where you can see and manage your recent activity on Google+.

3. Community owners and moderators will have more control over who posts what with approved posting (no word on what it means.)

4. Google is going all-in on the new Google+ - it will be switching current and new users to the new UI by default. For now, users will still be able to switch back to the classic Google+, but that will most likely go away soon.

If you are still undecided about the new G+, the decision has been made for you.

Better learn how to use it and get used to it!

I published a full tutorial to the new G+ at TrafficGenerationCafe.com: http://ift.tt/1QQCnoK.

5. For businesses, Google is also making Google+ a core service for Google Apps users, pushing Communities and Collections as easy ways to share ideas and collaborate with team members.

There you have it!
