Pinterest made Instapaper premium features free for all
Pinterest made Instapaper premium features free for all
Pinterest announced that Instapaper Premium is now available to all users for free (it acquired Instapaper back in August.)
That means that all Instapaper users will have access to the following:
☕ Full-text search for all articles
☕ Unlimited notes
☕ Unlimited speed reading
☕ Text-to-speech playlists
☕ "Send to Kindle” via bookmarklet and mobile apps
☕ Kindle Digests of up to 50 articles
☕ An ad-free Instapaper website
All of the above used to be available via a subscription price of $2.99/month or $29.99/year.
Pinterest said that existing Instapaper subscribers “will receive a prorated refund in the coming weeks.”
Is this yet another 'let's acquire users first, figure out how to monetize them later' kind of business mode?

[Vine creators rejoice?] Giphy has made a tool that lets you download and keep your Vines forever
Giphy loves all things looping, so it has created a tool to help you save your Vines.
You can find it here: http://ift.tt/2fowUdR
All you need is a Giphy account.
PROBLEM: videos have sound. GIFs don't. Now what?
According to a post at +TechCrunch http://tgcafe.it/2f8RDiH, the video will be saved as a GIF (plus another format), and the sound will be saved separately. It’ll only be shareable as a GIF at first, but that could change later.
Hmmm... what if it DOESN'T change later?...

❓❓ What makes a good writer ‘good‘? Or a great piece of writing ‘great‘?
❓❓ What makes a good writer ‘good‘? Or a great piece of writing ‘great‘?
To me, a good piece of writing resonates with both the reader AND the writer.
It has to touch them BOTH.
Then and only then, the writer will write well and the reader won’t stop reading.
💭 THOUGHTS? How would YOU define what makes a great blog post great?

Facebook demos Prisma-like app that overlays famous artists’ styles onto your live videos
Facebook demos Prisma-like app that overlays famous artists’ styles onto your live videos
The technology lets you transfer the style of an artist, say, Monet or Rembrandt, onto your image by using what’s called Convolutional Neural Networks and computer vision.
Yes, like Prisma app has been doing for a while. ;)
The feature was demonstrated on stage at the WSJD Live conference (http://tgcafe.it/2eeBzel), but it’s not something that will released any time soon.
Interestingly enough, Prisma IS releasing this very feature via Prisma Live. (http://tgcafe.it/2eQ0x5f)
Do we REALLY need these kinds of filters to inundate livestreams like they do Snapchat, Instagram, etc?
As +Nazim Beltran noticed in a comment on the G+ post mentioned above (http://tgcafe.it/2eQ0x5f):
"A bit of a gimmick in my humble opinion. I can understand filters in Snapchat and Google Hangouts but they tend to wear thin after a while."
While I personally agree... here's what Chris Cox, Facebook’s CPO said at the WSJD Live conference on the subject.
He said that the company predicts that in the next 5 years, 70% of internet traffic will be video.
(and they are not the only ones, of course; see a lot more stats plus a lot about the HOWs of video marketing in this post: http://bit.ly/content-samurai-review)
It's expected to be true across all of Facebook’s properties, whether for messaging — moving from voice to video calls — on Instagram, or in other applications.
He revealed that Facebook has been looking at a “perennial product problem for phones, which is how do you make it easy for someone to capture and create a video that’s nice using a mobile phone. This is something that most of us aren’t super comfortable doing; it’s really hard to create something you’re really proud of.” (excerpt from VentureBeat's http://tgcafe.it/2ezb5XD)

Prisma filters are about to take over Facebook Live videos
Prisma filters are about to take over Facebook Live videos
Prisma's CEO and cofounder Alexey Moiseenkov announced, as well as demonstrated in a broadcast (http://tgcafe.it/2eV2cou), that Prisma Live will now give users the ability to apply Prisma filters to video livestreams, starting with Facebook Live.
THE SKINNY:
☕️ To broadcast a Prisma-style video, users simply need to start a livestream using Prisma Live.
☕️ There are at least 10 styles that can be used, but it’s likely that number could be closer to 17 at launch.
Earlier this month, Prisma announced video editing support, allowing people to create 15-second clips. http://tgcafe.it/2dLwnlV

YouTube has a new (better?) way to disclose paid promotions
YouTube has launched a new, optional video feature that adds visible text on the video for the first few seconds a viewer watches, informing viewers of a paid promotion.
Creators can also choose to add this text disclosure to any existing video without losing their view count or other video metrics.
As always, remember to notify YouTube when a video contains paid promotion by checking the “video contains paid promotion” box in the Video Manager.
Also: "We’re excited to provide this feature in response to requests for an easy-to-use notification, but since there is no global disclosure standard, creators and brands should check and follow applicable laws as they may vary greatly by region." http://tgcafe.it/2dez0YX

Is building directory links still a good link building strategy? Google says no
Last week, Google's +John Mueller and +Gary Illyes both made comments about directory links, as posted by +Barry Schwartz http://tgcafe.it/2dU0YNU.
Gary later said on Twitter that he was talking about an article they both read on Search Engine Land - Barry suspects it was related to this story which talks about getting links from "highly ranking and well-maintained directories that are relevant to the product or service you provide." http://tgcafe.it/2cNmn68
Sounds like it would be wise to stay away from directory link building altogether.

Facebook has launched Marketplace, a Craigslist-like service to buy and sell items in your community
Marketplace lets people search for things that others are selling nearby - anything from furniture to books to electronics. It an extension of Facebook’s existing For Sale groups feature.
THE SKINNY:
☕ To visit Marketplace, tap on the shop icon at the bottom of the Facebook app.
☕ Marketplace opens with photos of items that people near you have listed for sale.
☕ To find something specific, search at the top and filter your results by location, category or price.
☕ You can also browse what’s available in a variety of categories such as Household, Electronics and Apparel.
☕ Use the built-in location tool to adjust the region you’re looking in, or switch to a different city altogether.
☕ When you find something interesting, tap on the image to see item specifics. You can also save the item to find it later.
☕ Send the seller a direct message from Marketplace to tell them you’re interested and make an offer. From that point on, it's between you.
TO POST ITEMS:
☕ Take a photo of your item, or add it from your camera roll
☕ Enter a product name, description and price
☕ Confirm your location and select a category
☕ Post
Looks pretty simple.
Over the next few days, Marketplace will be rolling out to everyone over 18 years old in the US, UK, Australia, and New Zealand on the Facebook app for iPhone and Android. Additional countries and Marketplace on the desktop will be available 'in the coming months.'

In a blog post http://tgcafe.it/2cViSxZ, Periscope said channels based on hashtags, such as #Food, #Music or #Talk, among others, will be updated in real-time when someone in the community goes live with a broadcast.
Users can also browse featured curated channels based on specific topics or events, such as “Police, Race and America” or “NFL: Road to Super Bowl 51.”
Honestly, Periscope website makes me dizzy... 😲 😩

Google Optimize free version will be available next month; you can request an invite
Google Optimize is a landing page testing and optimization tool that integrates directly with Google Analytics.
It's a free version of Google's enterprise-class testing and personalization product, Google Optimize 360.
It natively integrates into Google Analytics, and works right out of the box.
Motley Fool said they went from days to minutes for the same analysis by implementing Optimize 360.
Sounds like something a typical webmaster could certainly use... I, for one, am looking forward to it!
Google Optimize will be globally available next month; o get on the waiting list for it, go to G.co/optimize.

Twitter has introduced a new dedicated way to drive website conversions for advertisers
Twitter is separating its Website Clicks or Conversions ad objective into two separate objectives: Website Clicks and Website Conversions.
In other words, if you are a Twitter advertiser based in the U.S., you'll now be able to narrow down what exactly you are willing to pay for: website visits or website conversions specifically.
To use the new website conversion tracking, advertisers need to implement Twitter’s website tag to track and optimize activity.
In addition, key conversion events must be set, and cost per conversion goals have to be specified.
To get started with the Website Conversions objective, visit http://ads.twitter.com/getstarted.
The new Website Conversions objective is now available in beta to advertisers in the US. Based on user feedback, Twitter will look to expand availability to advertisers in additional regions.

Google Apps has been christened G Suite
Are you a Google Apps user? Fear not, Google Apps is here to stay, just under a different name to "better reflect this mission": G Suite.
A quote from the announcement of G Suite http://tgcafe.it/2dMx3XC:
"With G Suite, information can flow freely between devices, apps, people and teams, so great ideas never get left in the margins again. Imagine the future for your business, if this was how it could be . . ."
A lot more is promised to be on the way http://tgcafe.it/2cIdsCV.

Meerkat is dead; long live Houseparty - the new group video chat app
The maker of the once-so-popular-now-all-but-forgotten Meerkat, Life On Air launched Houseparty, a group video chat app for Android and iOS.
Houseparty lets a number of people hang out on video.
Actually, the app was launched a while ago (it even reached No. 2 on iTunes in May), but no one knew Life On Air was behind it.
http://joinhouse.party/
"On the surface it feels like it’s a super-fast ‘group Facetime,’ and what’s gets us really excited is that it’s actually the atomic unit (first step) for our vision to build a synchronous social network where people hang with their friends when they physically apart. The app is spreading throughout colleges in America, and we just hit a million users!” Life On Air cofounder and chief executive Ben Rubin told VentureBeat in an online chat http://tgcafe.it/2dekRjU.
Haven't used it personally yet. If you have, would love to hear your thoughts.

Twitter Moments are being democratized - any user will now be able to create and curate them
Twitter Moments, originally announced last October (http://tgcafe.it/1RsbF3W) are collections of tweets on certain subjects.
Until now Moments have been curated by Twitter staffers, but as of today, anyone will be able to curate Moments based on their own as well as on other people’s content.
Twitter Moments will first be open to the users on the web; it is coming soon to Twitter’s mobile apps as well.
Here's a link to Twitter's guide (a 'Moment' of its own - you get to see what it's about first hand) to 'Tips & tricks for making a great Moment' http://tgcafe.it/2dCcgH3 - not much there, but might be helpful nonetheless.
Below's a quick video on how Moments work.

Google introduced a new way to quickly find content from installed apps on your Android phone
Google introduced a new way to quickly find content from installed apps on your Android phone
To access this feature, go to the Google app on your Android phone and find the In Apps tab.
A few examples of what you can do with this new search mode:
☕ Find your contacts and messages.
Easily find the friend you want to catch up with, or the name of the new sushi place that your friend told you about last month — just search for [sushi] and find the message.
☕ Listen to your favorite running song or watch that sneezing panda video for the 15th time — all in one place.
☕ Stay organized with your tasks and notes.
Want to check off items on your grocery list? No problem, just search for [groceries].
Today this search works with apps like Gmail, Spotify and YouTube.
In the coming months, Google will also be adding more apps, including Facebook Messenger, LinkedIn, Evernote, Glide, Todoist and Google Keep.
Searching your personal results happens entirely on your phone, so you can search even when you're not connected to WiFi or cellular data.
Only you can see your personal results, and you can control what apps appear by going to Settings within the Google app.

Now you can see your Google Calendar and Gmail events, plus Google Contacts in Google Maps
Starting today, Android users worldwide will be able to quickly and easily access their events directly from the map - whether you're heading to a family dinner or getting subway directions to a birthday party.
THE SKINNY:
☕ Enter the address in the “Where” box when you create an event in Google Calendar.
☕ The next time you open Google Maps you’ll see your Google Calendar event right there on the map.
☕ To see a list of your upcoming events, simply open the sidebar menu, tap “Your Places” and then tap “Upcoming.”
☕ If you don’t want to see specific events on the map, you can hide them by tapping on the event from the map and then tapping “Dismiss.”
☕ You can label frequently visited places or upcoming destinations for quick access.
Just search for the address you want to label, press the label button, and enter a name.
The next time you type the name into the search box in Google Maps, your label will be a suggested result.
☕ Your Gmail events (confirmation emails for hotel, flight or restaurant reservations in Gmail) also appear in the new “Upcoming” tab in “Your Places.”
☕ Your Google contacts will appear on Google Maps as well.
☕ To manage all your personal content and how it appears on Google Maps, you can use the new personal content manager under the settings tab in the side menu. Simply toggle off what you don’t want to show and toggle on what’s most helpful to you.
All great changes, wouldn't you say?

😮 YouTube will shoot a FREE professional video for your business when you spend $150 to advertise on YouTube
You heard me right.
It's called YouTube Director Onsite https://director.youtube.com/
Let me say right off the bat that the service is only available in six major metropolitan areas: San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Atlanta, Chicago, and Boston.
To check if they're filming in your area, enter your zip code on the home page: https://director.youtube.com/
How does it work? THE SKINNY
☕ Choose a video template and they'll match you with a filmmaker to help you write a script.
☕ Your filmmaker will come to you to shoot, edit, and deliver your video—all in the same day.
☕ An ads specialist will get your video ad set up to help you reach the right audience for your business. You'll need to spend at least $150 on YouTube advertising.
☕ The entire process usually takes a few hours over 2-3 weeks.
If $150 still feels like a lot, The YouTube Director for Business app is a completely free way to start making video for your business. It is based on the same templates YouTube uses for Director onsite and it includes a ton of help content to help you make great videos using just your smartphone.
You can learn more about Director for Business here https://www.youtube.com/yt/advertise/make-video-ads.html

Twitter has introduced an “I don’t like this tweet option” for iOS users
Twitter has enabled a feature that lets you mark tweets that you don’t like - for iOS users for now.
This seems to be helpful if you elected to view Twitter's (new) algorithmic timeline instead of its traditional chronologically-ordered one.
(If you are not sure what I am talking about, learn about it here http://tgcafe.it/1osoHWy or see how to turn it off here http://tgcafe.it/22prZID.)
Presumably the more tweets you mark, the better the algorithm gets at determining what you like and don’t like.
You can learn more about controling your Twitter experience here: https://support.twitter.com/articles/20170134#controls

Facebook overestimated average viewing time for its video ads by 60-80% for two years
Facebook overestimated average viewing time for its video ads by 60-80% for two years
Apparently, for the past two years Facebook only counted video views of more than 3 seconds when calculating its “Average Duration of Video Viewed” metric.
Video views of under three seconds were not factored in, thereby inflating the average.
The Skinny:
☕ The error was discovered about a month ago by Facebook engineers.
☕ The 'average duration of video viewed' metric should have been calculated as the total time spent watching a video divided by the total number of people who played the video.
☕ Instead, it reflected the total time spent watching a video divided by only the number of “views” of a video (that is, when the video was watched for three or more seconds).
☕ As a result, the earlier counting method likely overestimated average time spent watching videos by between 60% and 80%, according to what the ad buying agency Publicis Media was told by Facebook. http://tgcafe.it/2dwe0kr
☕ To Facebook's credit, as soon as the discrepancy was discovered, it was fixed.
☕ Facebook also informed their partners and made sure to put a notice in the product itself so that anyone who went into their dashboard could understand the error.
☕ According to David Fischer, vice president of business and marketing partnership at Facebook, "We have also reviewed our other video metrics on the dashboard and have found that this has no impact on video numbers we have shared in the past, such as time spent watching video or the number of video views." http://tgcafe.it/2cWVDmB
☕ In the same post, David Fischer has also "sincerely apologized for the issues this has created for our clients."
Of course, due to the miscalculated data...
☕ marketers may have misjudged the performance of video advertising they have purchased from Facebook over the past two years.
☕ it also may have impacted their decisions about how much to spend on Facebook video versus other video ad sellers such as Google’s YouTube, Twitter, and even TV networks.

Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) begin global rollout in Google mobile search results
Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) begin global rollout in Google mobile search results
AMP are officially moving beyond the “Top Stories” section of Google mobile search. http://tgcafe.it/2d3ybSy
The Skinny:
☕ You’ll now see a gray 'AMP' label that indicates a page is AMP’d in Google's organic mobile search results.
☕ AMP pages won’t get a special boost in mobile results - this is NOT a rankings change.
☕ When there are two versions of a page, Google will prefer and link to the AMP version.
☕ There are now more than 600 million AMP-enabled documents, up from 150 million this summer.
☕ AMP categories now go well beyond news content - shopping, cooking, travel, e-commerce and entertainment, among others.
To find out more about AMP, check out ampproject.org.

Say Hello to Google Allo, Google's new messaging app. Core difference? Google's new Google Assistant
The brand-new Allo, available today for both for Android and iOS, has a number of interesting chat-related features, but what really makes it stand out is its capabilities involving search.
Meet your personal Google Assistant
In Google Allo, you’ll be introduced to a preview edition of the Google Assistant.
With your Assistant in Allo, you can have a conversation with Google — ask it questions and let it help you get things done directly in your chats.
Just type @google to bring your Assistant into any group chat. And of course, you can also chat one-one-one with your Assistant in Allo.
This is just the beginning of Google Assistant, by the way.
As Google writes http://tgcafe.it/2d33yfV:
"The Google Assistant is the next chapter in a journey Google has been on for many years to assist people in their everyday lives. We’re starting with a preview edition to show you just one way that your Assistant will work for you in chat. Over the coming months, your Assistant will be available in more Google products, working seamlessly throughout your day at home or on the go. The Assistant will initially be available in English, with more languages coming soon."

Gird your loins! Google Penguin update: Penguin is now real-time
Gird your loins! Google Penguin update: Penguin is now real-time
Google has officially confirmed they've began rolling out the Penguin real-time algorithm. http://tgcafe.it/2csRJDV
The Skinny:
☕ Penguin was first launched in 2012 and today has an update.
☕ Penguin is now real-time, so changes will be visible much faster, typically taking effect shortly after Google recrawls and reindexes a page.
☕ Penguin is now more granular. It devalues spam by adjusting ranking based on spam signals, rather than affecting ranking of the whole site.
"...webmasters should be free to focus on creating amazing, compelling websites. It's also important to remember that updates like Penguin are just one of more than 200 signals we use to determine rank."
Good idea...

Outlook.com gets support for Google Drive files, sharing Facebook photos, and finding attachments in past emails
Adding your Google Drive:
☕ begin a new message
☕ click or tap the attachment icon
☕ select Google Drive
☕ enter your account credentials.
Once added, your Google Drive appears as a source when attaching files. You can browse and select your files from either a list view or as thumbnails.
Facebook Photos:
Follow the same steps above to connect your Facebook account.
Once connected, you’ll be able to browse and attach your photos right from Facebook.
Your photos will be organized just like they are in Facebook: “Photos of me” are the ones that you’ve been tagged in and “My photos” are the ones you’ve uploaded.
Finding attachments in long conversations:
At the top of every thread, you’ll now find an attachment icon.
Click it to open a drop-down list of all the attachments in the conversation.
Simply select the file you are looking for and open it—you don’t have to click through each reply or expand the thread.
Microsoft will be rolling out these features "over the next few weeks."
