RankBrain: Google’s new AI technology that helps deliver its search results
A couple of days ago, news emerged that Google was using a machine-learning artificial intelligence system called “RankBrain” to help sort through its search results. (first reported by
+Bloomberg Business http://bloom.bg/1O6yQTp)
Here’s the Skinny on what we know so far about RankBrain:
♨ What is RankBrain?
RankBrain is an artificial intelligence technology Google is using to help deliver its search results, particularly for the 15% of daily search queries that Google has never seen before.
And here's an interesting quote from
+Danny Sullivan http://selnd.com/1XxUuRV:
"From emailing with Google, I gather RankBrain is mainly used as a way to interpret the searches that people submit to find pages that might not have the exact words that were searched for."
♨ How does RankBrain work?
RankBrain converts written language into mathematical entities called
'vectors' that can be understood by computers.
When presented with an unfamiliar word, RankBrain will help formulate a guess at what the query was about and filter accordingly.
♨ So RankBrain is a part of Google’s Hummingbird Search Algorithm?
A quote from
+Danny Sullivan at
+Search Engine Land http://selnd.com/1XxUuRV:
"That’s our understanding. Hummingbird is the overall search algorithm, just like a car has an overall engine in it. The engine itself may be made up of various parts, such as an oil filter, a fuel pump, a radiator and so on. In the same way, Hummingbird encompasses various parts, with RankBrain being one of the newest."
♨ When did it go live?
According to
+Jennifer Slegg's post (
http://bit.ly/1kPzdFs),
“it was rolled out gradually starting early in 2015.”
♨ What kind of queries is RankBrain used on?
While RankBrain is
particularly good at results for the 15% of of new-to-Google searches, it is being used on a large percentage of Google’s search queries.

♨ It’s the third most important signal in the Google ranking algorithm.
From the
+Bloomberg Business' article
http://bloom.bg/1O6yQTp:
"RankBrain is one of the “hundreds” of signals that go into an algorithm that determines what results appear on a Google search page and where they are ranked, Corrado said. In the few months it has been deployed, RankBrain has become the third-most important signal contributing to the result of a search query, he said."
♨ What are the first and second-most important signals?
Google won't tell us. Shocker.
♨ Is it applied more for certain niches or topics?
The Google spokesperson said it is “not limited to any particular set of queries.”

♨ How often does RankBrain get updated?
When
+Jennifer Slegg asked Google about the frequency of updates, they said they will update as needed.
“We’ll keep experimenting with and testing new models, and we’ll make updates as we come up with models that do a better job than the existing one. That could be about refreshing the data or developing new neural net architectures.”
♨ RankBrain covers all languages.
♨ Don't worry, SEO is still alive and well.
RankBrain hasn't and won't kill it ;) - according to Google's
+Gary Illyes http://bit.ly/1jQ64JW.
♨ Want to know what the industry thinks about RankBrain?
+Jennifer Slegg has put together a post with 9 industry experts weighing in on RankBrain:
+Glenn Gabe +Michael Bonfils +Marie Haynes +Dave Davies +Bill Slawski and others - read their opinions here:
