Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey (@Jack) reacts to rumors of Twitter 140-character limit increase

A tweet sent by Jack Dorsey Tuesday afternoon neither confirms nor denies such reports (more on that http://tgcafe.it/1JXX77K), but does show that Dorsey is definitely open to changing the character limit.

Of course, in that tweet, he highlights yet another way that Twitter already allows tweets longer than 140 characters: his tweet is a screenshot of a block of text (see below or http://tgcafe.it/1ZO7RyK).

More people died from taking selfies in 2015 than from shark attacks...

Which was more deadly in 2015: shark attacks, or selfies?

The answer might surprise you.

Rawhide, a nonprofit organization that assists at-risk youth in Wisconsin, examined social media users’ obsession with selfies and narcissistic tendencies, and its findings included:

♨ More people died from taking selfies in 2015 than from shark attacks.
♨ 55 percent of millennials have taken selfies and shared them via social media.
♨ 74 percent of all images shared on Snapchat are selfies.
♨ 1,000 selfies are posted to Instagram every 10 seconds.
♨ There are 93 million selfies each day, which would represent 2,583,333 rolls of film.
♨ 19 out of 20 teens have taken selfies.

Wow...

Twitter Considering 10,000-Character Limit for Tweets? ...oh, please no...

Twitter Considering 10,000-Character Limit for Tweets? ...oh, please no...

Re/code has just reported that a Twitter team is working on a project called “Beyond 140,” that would allow Twitter users to share their thoughts well beyond 140 characters - 10,000 to be exact, the same limit the platform puts on direct messages. http://tgcafe.it/1VG31kJ

The report is based on "multiple sources familiar with the company’s plans." A Twitter spokesperson declined to comment.

This doesn’t mean your timeline will be clogged by monstrous tweets.

It sounds like only the first 140 characters would show up in a timeline with an option to read more; sort of like Facebook does it with longer posts.

Here's an excerpt from Re/code's post:

"The 140-character limit has been around as long as Twitter has; it’s part of the product’s personality. Expanding the limit is a sign that Twitter and Jack Dorsey are willing to make serious changes in hopes of luring new users. Twitter is also tinkering with the idea of changing its reverse chronological timeline — another core Twitter feature.

With regards to expanded tweets, Twitter is also working out a plan for how to deal with potential spamming issues that might arise with an expanded character count, according to sources. It’s unknown, for example, if Twitter will restrict how many users can be mentioned in a single tweet, but the company is apparently thinking through those scenarios. Twitter plans to talk with some of its analytics and measurement partners to prepare them to handle longer tweets beginning later this month, sources say."

Re/code’s story notes that this could come toward the end of Q1, but no launch date is determined yet.

Yahoo board meets to discuss potential sale of company

Yahoo board meets to discuss potential sale of company

The Wall Street Journal this afternoon reported that the Yahoo board is going to consider this week whether to sell some or all of the company:

"The fate of troubled Internet portal Yahoo Inc. may be decided in a marathon series of board meetings this week.

Yahoo’s board plans to weigh a potential sale of the company’s core business during a series of meetings beginning Wednesday and continuing through Friday, people familiar with the matter said.

The board is expected to discuss whether to proceed with a plan to spin off more than $30 billion in shares of Alibaba Holding Group Ltd., find a buyer for Yahoo’s core business of Web properties, or both, the people said." http://tgcafe.it/1TlcoUW

Investors seem to like the idea: Yahoo shares rose 7% in after-hours trading following news of the breakup talks, after closing at $33.71 Tuesday.
